Google now a ‘mobile-first’ company
Google’s chief executive Eric Schmidt has told Mobile World Congress that smartphone sales will soon overtake computers

ERIC Schmidt, chief executive of Google, has said the internet giant will now build software for mobile phones before computers as he predicted that sales of smartphones will soon overtake PCs.

Mr Schmidt used his first keynote address to the Mobile World Congress last night to announce the company’s new “mobile first” culture.

“Our programmers are doing work on mobile first,” he said. “We’ll still have a desktop version, but we’ll also have one on a high-performance mobile phone. The top programmers want to work on mobile apps.

“Phones are so much more personal and satisfying. The phone is no longer just a phone, it’s your alter ego – it’s fundamental to everything you do.”

Mr Schmidt said smartphones sales will overtake PCs within the next few years and more than half of new internet connections will be from mobile devices. He added that more than 60,000 devices running Google’s Android mobile operating are being shipped every day.

He said the fundamental shift to focus on mobile first was driven by the expected shift in advertising from traditional media to the internet and then to mobile phones. “Mobile advertising should ultimately be much better [than PC advertising],” he said. “With a mobile device we know where you are so we can offer much more enhanced localised opportunities.”

Mr Schmidt acknowledged that location based services could be “worrisome”, due to privacy fears but said people have the choice to turn the applications on and off.

He also revealed new services, including the ability to translate restaurant menus by taking pictures and the extension of voice-activated search into German as well as English, Mandarin and Japanese.

Here at TribePad we are in the process of building our social media platform for iPhones and fully believe that in the years to come 9sooner rather than later) our users will be logging on from their mobiles more than form their PC’s or laptops.
